Shortlisted for the Man Booker prize this year for his novel “Transatlantic”, Colum McCann made an appearance on Stephen Colbert’s “The Colbert Report” earlier this week.

Of course what do top Irish literary figures and an Irish American comedian talk about when they get together.... “Fifty Shades of Grey” and James Joyce. Not the most likely combination but nonetheless. Colbert  admitted that he  has James Joyce's "Ulysses" but not E.L. James "Fifty Shades of Grey".

McCann, now a true New Yorker, won the National Book Award for his novel “Let the Great World Spin” also managed to squeeze in some discussion of his new novel “Transatlantic”, a multi-generational story of people crossing between two countries.

An Irish musician, and father-of-three, has released a new single, “Woe!”, about the reality of living through Ireland’s recession.

After the crash Billy Treacy (42) witnessed employment dry up as bills continued to arrive at the door. He said he could feel his self-esteem slip away every day. The “white van man” was overcome with emotion and channelled his angst into his new single “Woe!”

Speaking to the Irish Mirror, Treacy, a well known musician in Temple Bar as front man for the Ha’Penny Heads. Treacy, who grew up above a pub in Dublin City Center learned about music listening to the musicians in his family’s bar.

He told the Mirror “I feel so strongly about the message in Woe!. I begged and borrowed to get the song recorded and released.

"I wrote it in a couple of hours one day this summer as a way of venting my anger, frustration and helplessness at all that is happening in Ireland at the moment.

"I know that there are thousands of proud people out there who feel the same way and I hope they will identify with my song.”

Thirty-three leprechauns and pots of gold, ranging from $50 to $1,500 brought hundreds out in support of the 19th Annual Family Fun Day and Leprechaun Hunt, in LaPorte, Indiana.

The leprechauns were hidden over 185 acres and crowds of people, young and old, ventured out in hunt of the little mythical green men.

Executive director Kathleen Kelly told local news WNDU “This is just a great show of support. It shows us that people care about sharing meadows and what happens here.”

Hillary Clinton speech during 1992 presidential campaign still strikes a chord among women (VIDEO)

Hillary Clinton speech during 1992 presidential campaign still strikes a chord among women (VIDEO)
Hillary Clinton speaking in 1992
Over two decades ago, Hillary Clinton delivered the commencement address to Wellesley College's graduating class, during her husband’s 1992 presidential election campaign.

A member of the Wellesley College class of 1969, during  her 1992 speech, Clinton lay out the "rules" for women struggling to balance family and work, many of which still resonate today.

Clinton discussed the challenges facing the 1992 graduating class as well as current international affairs following the Cold War during the 25-minute address.

She also spoke about the difficulty of women juggling motherhood with their careers.

Clinton states: “As women today, you do face tough choices. You know the rules are basically as follows:

“If you don't get married, you're abnormal.

“If you get married, but don't have children, you're a selfish yuppie.

“If you get married and have children, but then go outside the home to work, you're a bad mother.

“If you get married and have children, but stay home, you've wasted your education.

“And if you don't get married, but have children and work outside the home as a fictional newscaster, you get in trouble with the vice president.”

Clinton's advice to women at the time? "Hold on to your dreams, whatever they are."
